Grinding fluids perform several critical functions including lubricating and cooling the grinding zone, evacuating chips and providing corrosion protection for the workpiece. It must deliver an optimal balance of lubricity and flushing performance. Conventional coolants with inadequate lubricity lead to excessive heat generation and thermal damage to components, while uneven temperature cycles during grinding can induce residual stresses. At the same time, insufficient flushing allows swarf to accumulate in the grinding wheel pores, causing wheel loading or results in abrasive grains becoming dull and glazed. These conditions reduce cutting efficiency, raise grinding forces, elevate heat generation and degrade surface finish ultimately increasing machine downtime and rejection rates.

Customer was using a cutting fluid from a prominent brand ‘Y’ for 15 years.
Key operational concerns:
- Despite using DM water with the required hardness, the cutting fluid failed to provide intermittent rust protection, especially during the monsoon season.
- High top-up ratio of 5% led to high consumption
- Persistent issues with bad odour created an unpleasant working environment
- Maintaining optimal machine cleanliness was a challenging task, impacting overall shop floor hygiene and work environment
With operational challenges intensifying day by day, the customer began searching for a cutting fluid solution that could effectively address these issues while delivering consistent and reliable machining performance.
Recognised across the industry as the leading manufacturer of cutting fluids for its extensive experience in developing high-performance cutting fluids for a wide range of machining applications, the BECHEM team partnered with the customer to conduct a controlled on-site trial.
After a detailed evaluation of the workpiece material composition and the machining operations of grinding and turning involved, BECHEM recommended its water-based cutting fluid, BECHEM Avantin 331 H as the most suitable cutting fluid for the case.
The trial commenced in a single CNC machine, allowing for meticulous observation of its performance over a five-month period.
Trial observations:
- No rusting issues: Even during the monsoon season, no traces of corrosion were observed.
- Reduced consumption: The top-up ratio drastically reduced to 1.5%, resulting in coolant cost saving.
- Elimination of odour issues: The concern for unpleasant smell was completely eradicated, thereby improving the working environment for machine operators.
- Improved machine cleanliness: Machines remained free from residue and build-up, leading to reduced maintenance efforts.
- Better surface finish of components.
Trial results:
Having observed the performance of the water-based grinding fluid, the customer expressed complete satisfaction and switched over to BECHEM Avantin 331 H for the entire shop floor resulting in the changeover of emulsion at the 135KL centralised tank.
